Beat the 3 PM Crash: Smart Energy Habits That Actually Work

If you regularly hit a wall at 3 PM—feeling groggy, unfocused, and desperate for another kopi—you are far from alone. In a recent Channel News Asia (CNA) feature, our very own Dr. Wong Siu Kwan shared how common midday fatigue really is among working adults in Singapore.

The good news? You don't have to accept afternoon exhaustion as inevitable. By understanding a few simple signals from your body, you can tweak your routine to keep your energy steady all day long.

Here is what is really driving your midday slump—and how to fix it.

1. Fix the "Food Coma"

That heavy, sleepy feeling after lunch happens when high-carb meals (like a big bowl of white rice or noodles) cause your blood sugar to spike quickly and then plummet.

What to do instead:

Balance your plate: You don't need to quit carbs! Just pair them with plenty of protein and fiber (like vegetables or tofu) to slow down digestion and keep your blood sugar steady.

Order of eating: Try eating your greens and protein first, saving the rice or noodles for last.

Take a 10-minute post-lunch walk: A short stroll helps your body use up circulating sugar, preventing that steep blood sugar crash.

2. Work With Your Biological Clock (Chronotype)

We often hear that healthy people workout at 6 AM. But forcing yourself out of bed at dawn might actually be draining your tank for the rest of the day.

This comes down to your "chronotype" —your body’s natural genetic clock that dictates when you feel most alert or tired:

Morning Larks: Naturally wake up early with high energy. Morning workouts set a great tone for their day.

Evening Owls: Peak later in the day. Forcing early intense workouts raises stress hormones, leaving them exhausted by 3 PM.

Dr. Wong stresses that consistency matters far more than the time on the clock. If you’re an owl, do your exercise in the late afternoon or evening when your strength and energy are naturally higher. Aligning movement with your internal clock keeps you energised instead of burnt out.

3. Give Your Brain Real Rest

When you take a work break, do you reach for your phone to scroll social media? While it feels like relaxing, constant scrolling actually overstimulates your brain and strains your eyes, leaving you more mentally fatigued.

What to do instead:

The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object 6 metres away for 20 seconds to give your eye muscles a break.

Step away from screens: Take true breaks by stepping away from your desk, doing a quick stretch, or grabbing a glass of water without your phone in hand.

Reclaim Your Energy

Staying energised is about working with your body, not against it. Small, consistent shifts in how you eat, move, and rest can completely transform how you feel by mid-afternoon.

If you are making healthy choices but still feel constantly exhausted, underlying factors like thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies, or sleep problems could be at play.
